SYDNEY 2BL PHILIP CLARK 6.27 AM 31ST JANUARY, 2000. PRESENTER COMMENTS ON THE DEATH OF AN ELEVEN YEAR OLD BOY IN RELATION TO A LACK OF MOBILE PHONE COVERAGE IN THE AREA. PHILIP CLARK - PRESENTER: Sad news about the news of an eleven year old boy at Patonga, killed by the propeller of a speedboat as he was trying to retrieve a waterski. Terrible accident, and understandably everyone is tremendously upset by the matter, particularly ... the grandfather who was apparently driving the boat.Shocking accident. Complicated in part by something that I wasn’t aware of, in that it was that there were mobile phones present. As they rang to try and get ambulance assistance it wasn’t possible apparently, because of the mobile phone coverage. We might check up with the phone companies about this later, but it’s apparently a problem on that part of the Central Coast, and gee whiz it’s not that far away, is it? It’s hardly the boondocks, but apparently mobile phones don’t work very well there. They had to try and get a landline ... now there are landlines there at Patonga, clearly, but it would have been better if there was a mobile phone. We’ll try and find out what the coverage is.
