Dear member of AIR SAFETY AUSTRALIA, 22nd November, 2003
THE WRIGHT BROTHERS CENTENARY – 17th DECEMBER
A CASA-FREE CELEBRATION OF THE JOY OF FLIGHT
AIR SAFETY AUSTRALIA’s celebration of the Centenary of Powered Flight will be held on 17th December 2003 – 100 years to the day after the Wright Brothers’ historic flight at Kittyhawk.
It will be a low-key day 40 miles West of Melbourne at historic Wooloomanata Station for invited guests to celebrate the joy of flight. If you are a member of AIR SAFETY AUSTRALIA and you would like to join in, please phone us or e-mail us before 30th November to request an invitation. If you are not yet a member of AIR SAFETY AUSTRALIA and you would like to fly in, please do likewise.
06:00 Aircraft begin arriving 10:00 Cars begin arriving 12:00 Lunch 17:00 Airfield closes. 17:01 Bar opens 18:30 Supper in the hangar. 21:00 Fireworks at the runway intersection (fire bans permitting) 06:00 (18th December) Airfield opens
Camping accommodation will be available on-site, with shearers’ showers nearby. Hotels and motels are available in the area and a mini-bus will be available for transport. You can fly in on 16th if you prefer, and camp in the hangar.
Balloons welcome, parachutes welcome, gliders welcome, ultra-lights welcome, hang gliders welcome. Every kind of flying contraption is welcome – but the occasion is for invited guests only. If you want an invitation, please phone or e-mail us and request one. Ian Findlay and Brian John are flying all the way from Albany WA.
This is a day for all. We will salute the Wright Brothers, of course. But we shall also recognise Joe and Jack Montgolfier, Santos Dumont, Lawrence Hargrave, Preston Watson, and many of the others who made it possible for us to experience the great joy of flight.
CASA will not be present so you need not fear a crack-down such as was advertised for the solar eclipse at Ceduna last year. This is a private occasion on private property and CASA personnel will not be admitted without a Warrant.
Good airmanship is expected of all who fly in. Good roadmanship is expected of all who drive in.
The AIR SAFETY AUSTRALIA Kittyhawk to Wooloomanata medals
Each invited ASA pilot of a non-radio aircraft equipped with a transponder will be presented with solid GOLD celebratory medal.
Each invited ASA pilot of a non-radio aircraft will be presented with a solid SILVER celebratory medal.
Each invited ASA member who arrives at Wooloomanata by air before noon will be presented with a BRONZE medal.
The awards are cumulative.
Pilots who wish to be presented with a GOLD or SILVER medal must be a member of AIR SAFETY AUSTRALIA and must advise us of their interest by 30th November, and will receive the commonsense full conditions. The conditions are not restrictive – for example a member may parachute in without a radio and with a transponder on her backside and receive a solid GOLD medal.
Our GUEST OF HONOUR – nominations called for
Our Guest of Honour has not yet been selected. We ask for nominations by phone or e-mail for the pilot who has surmounted the greatest obstacles to start flying or keep flying. We want a pilot who has not been widely recognised before now, and especially seek nominations of young pilots.
