email from Robyn Meikle of the Australian Communications Authority stating the analogue closure schedule is unknown 7th February 2000 Dear Boyd, In response to your enquiry today about a closure schedule for the next phase of closures of the analogue mobile phone network. Full details of the next phase of AMPS closures are yet to be finalised by Telstra, and the ACA expects to be making a public announcement about these soon. An active campaign will then be run including press advertising showing the areas that will be closing and when. Regards, Robyn Meikle email from APUMP to the Australian Communications Authority asking who is making the decisions about the analogue closure schedule and who is being consulted. 7th February 2000 Hello Robyn, Thank you for the prompt reply to my question about the schedule for the closure of the remaining areas of analogue coverage, but I must say I am sorry your reply did not include the information I requested. This matter is of great importance to the people of regional Australia, who do not wish to wake up one morning and find that their analogue service was switched off last night - as happened to the people of Millmerran only last week. I am confused about why you cannot answer this very straightforward question. I asked Telstra's Greg Young first, and he said to ask you - his exact words were "PLs refer to ACA, they have responsibility for Analog Closure Public Education program. Greg Y". Now I have referred to the ACA, and you say it is Telstra that is making the decisions about the closure schedule. Who is making the decisions about the closure of the analogue network, and how much notice will people get? Is the National Party having any input into this decision-making process? Is anyone being consulted on behalf of the people of regional Australia? Cheers, Boyd Munro |
