* You don't have to know who your MP is - we'll work that out from your address;
* We compose a draft letter based on your answers to some questions;
* You then see the draft letter and amend it as you wish;
* When you are satisfied with the letter, click "FIRE AWAY";
* We receive the letter from you by EMAIL and will then check with you by phone that you are really the author and that you approve it;
* We then send it to your MP by EMAIL, and we also deliver it to him or her in Parliament House, so that your MP gets it even if he or she does not use EMAIL;
* Subject to your approval, we also send copies to the Senators for your state, and copies to the candidates who are opposing your MP at the next Federal Election. This makes your letter 10 times more powerful.
This sounds a bit like a petition, but nothing could be further from the truth. Every day several petitions are presented to Parliament, and absolutely nothing happens because of them. But individual letters to MPs are always answered. Most people cannot be bothered to send letters to their MP because it's such a process. What that means is that those letters which do get sent are taken seriously.
Your letter will represent your own personal point of view. It will not contain irrelevant nonsense. You can add some text of your own. You can change or delete anything you do not like. If you don't like the draft letter you can just scrap it. APUMP recommends that if your letter exceeds one page, you trim it down by removing the least important parts of it. One-page letters are much more likely to be read than 2-page letters. Remember than you can always send another letter covering the points you chop out of the first letter.
The initial reply you receive from your MP will normally be page upon page of bureaucratic gobbledegook, telling you why it's really good for you that the analogue network is being closed down!
