The Senate rejected the Telstra Privatisation Bill on Saturday 11th July. This will have no effect on the decision to install CDMA throughout Australia to replace the analogue network. Careful study of the CDMA announcement on 9th July by the Deputy Prime Minister, Tim Fischer, shows that he said nothing about the decision being contingent on the privatisation of Telstra. And Tim himself has confirmed there will be no effect - here is what he said.

"What Labor has done is destroyed some further upgrading of telecommunication infrastructure across country Australia with the exception of Telstra's decision to proceed with the new CDMA and much improved mobile telephone system - that was a board decision separate from this legislation and of course that will be proceeding that will not be affected by the Senate defeat."
